Tell us about some of the memories you’ve made on your journey!
I was in my early twenties, a homeless single mom and immigrant to the United States. I spoke very little English but somehow landed a job in a factory making $7.00/hr. It was my first day. I didn’t sleep the night before, whether it was stress or nerves, it didn’t matter. I was up at 5am, walking to the bus stop in the dead of winter in Massachusetts. It was a twenty-minute walk, and each minute was filled with new questions, “How did I get to this point in my life?” “How am I going to take care of myself and my daughter?”, “Where am I going to sleep tonight?”, The wind was slicing across my poorly covered skin. I got on the bus, sat down in silence and looked out the window for a few minutes. This was the bus to the factories. I looked around at the people riding with me. They were all tired, cold and old. They were easily between fifty to seventy years old. All I could think was, “Is this going to be my life? Is this what I have to look forward to?” It was the same bus every morning and evening, and the same tired, long faces to and from the factory, making $7.00/hr. to continue to struggle. I knew on that first bus ride, I wouldn’t turn myself into that I knew that there’s something better waiting for myself, and I start taking my own accountability make my own American dream.
Do you have any final thoughts you would like to share with our audience?
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Lana Ivanov
