Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian McCaulley Span.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
A long journey. I grew up in a small city called Sylvester located in South west Georgia. I’ve always sung and created since I can remember. I used to be very shy about my talent capabilities, especially when it came to my voice. Then I became to love my own uniqueness to my vocal abilities range etc. I also noticed that other people loved my sound and they thought I could sing. I was a bit surprised due to bullying from a close friend who always told me I wasn’t good at singing and picked on me. I took care of my ill mother from age 10 through the age of 22 ( when she passed) I was heartbroken because I had loss my stepfather who raised me 4 years prior. Taking that pain I headed to Atlanta and started my creative journey through acting, starting a production company and now singing, performing, and writing music. Even working with big people in the industry.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Losing my mother hit me the hardest. Especially since she was so ill for most of my adolescence. She was the strongest women I’ve ever known. Even though she went through so much physically, emotionally, and mentally then disabled she was still providing for me as I was her only son. The second thing that comes to mind is fake friends, psychologically unhealthy lovers, in which no one is perfect but a couple of guys I’ve dated weren’t good to me and this I had to move on from. Business is one, especially in the music business a lot of people will try to sell you a dream and take advantage of you in a Sociopathic way. In laymen terms, they will take advantage of you in a pretty bad way just to please themselves and get ahead. You can’t trust everyone. However there are a lot of genuine people in this world. Lastly, depression and anxiety. I mean losing my parents and going through so much I knew I’d have to battle those things at some point. I overcome and have overcame in a way any human could.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I’m a recording artist, singer, songwriter, and producer. I’m dedicated and I have a passion and drive for what I do. I’m also very genuine with the business. Energy is important for me when I work with someone. As far as competition I don’t see anyone as that. I’m in my own lane and I’m happy here. My specialty is creating doesn’t matter if it’s music, song writing, storytelling etc. My main work is working with other indie artists at this time it’s so many talented creatives who haven’t found their way or what works for them. Just like me.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
Be yourself! It sounds cliché but everyone else is taken. Also it wouldn’t do much for you in the long run if you’re not your authentic self. Like my Uncle said you can’t Fake the funk. Find what you’re passionate about and dedicate yourself and be consistent. It’s definitely easier said than done. However it’s easier once you handle most things on the inside of you. Like your struggles, flaws, etc. Then you can be more fruitful in your journey. I’d also say be kind, genuine, and willing to learn from others. You can’t become your most successful self without others. The catch to that is they just have to be the right people. Lastly, you can’t get around hard work. Do the work. Work hard play hard. Nothing comes to you in this world even if you grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth. Life is always a test for every single individual person. Most of all stay humble some people may not believe in a higher power, but we are actually so fragile we aren’t even on this earth long so that should let you know that you can’t survive with yourself or your peers alone. There’s got to be something above you that keeps you in check emotionally, spiritually, and physically. I personally think it’s the same higher power that made the grass, plants and trees, the wind and our physical bodies. Know yourself and you will find success.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Anything that makes me happy and joyful. It could be a thriving business, singing on a big stage like Madison Square Garden. Or a minimalistic lifestyle. As long as I’m doing something in this world that makes me happy it’s a success. Anything I can be proud of because I put in the work. That’s success to me.
What’s next for you?
The sky is not the limit.
I’m sure I’d step back into acting and filming. I’ll always love music though. I might write a book. Anything. May even meet someone special and have a family. All I know is I’m excited to see what’s next.
