Budgeting for a Mommy Makeover Starts With the Surgical Plan

The number on a mommy makeover quote comes late in the process, after a physical exam and a conversation about goals. Patients who start their budget before that conversation are guessing at a total built from parts they have not chosen yet.

Leo Lapuerta, MD, FACS, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years in practice, prices the operation from the plan outward. In its guidance on mommy makeover surgery in the Houston area, his practice says that cost depends on how many procedures are combined, and that an accurate quote requires a consultation in which he and the patient decide which procedures she needs.

For anyone planning the money side, that sequence suggests a practical order of operations.

Step one: settle the plan before the payment method

A mommy makeover is a bundle of separate operations, and each one adds to the total. The practice lists the common components:

  • Breast surgery, which may mean implants, a lift, both together, or a reduction
  • A tummy tuck to remove loose skin and tighten the abdominal muscles
  • Liposuction of stubborn areas, often including the flanks, and sometimes the thighs or hips

The practice also mentions buttock enhancement, and in some cases a thigh lift, an arm lift or body sculpting. Each addition changes the operating time, which the practice puts at four to ten hours, with a typical case running about seven. Ask for the quote to show which procedures it covers, so you can see what a change in the plan does to the total.

Step two: compare the financing routes

The practice offers payment plans so patients can spread the cost over monthly payments instead of paying a single lump sum. It lists four financing options:

  1. Alphaeon Credit card, which the practice describes as offering a range of monthly payment options.
  2. CareCredit, a medical financing provider.
  3. United Medical Credit, which works through a network of healthcare-focused lenders.
  4. GreenSky Patient Solutions, a program for healthcare treatments and services.

A patient coordinator at the practice helps patients sort through these plans. Before you sign with any lender, get answers in writing on the interest rate, the length of any promotional period, what happens to the balance if that period ends before you pay it off, and how the application affects your credit. Terms differ from one lender to the next, and the lender sets them, so read the agreement itself.

Step three: budget for the weeks outside the operating room

Several real costs of a mommy makeover do not show up on a surgical quote. The practice asks candidates to take at least two to three weeks off work, and most women return within that window depending on the job. Full recovery takes about six weeks, and the practice expects most patients to be ready for vigorous activity around six weeks.

Candidates also need a support system to help until they can handle daily routines again. For a parent of young children, that can mean paid childcare or a relative’s time off. Compression garments and limits on lifting are part of recovery too.

One more variable belongs in a contingency line. Most mommy makeovers are outpatient, but the practice recommends an overnight hospital stay for observation for patients with complex medical problems or those having a large amount of liposuction. Ask early whether your plan falls into that group.

Step four: ask about the Renew You Package

The practice also offers a Renew You Package for women dealing with body changes after childbirth. Under it, a patient may have any one or a combination of breast augmentation, a breast lift, a tummy tuck, Botox, Juvederm or a mommy makeover. If your plan overlaps with that list, ask the coordinator whether the package applies.

Timing protects the investment

Two timing rules in the practice’s guidance carry financial weight. A future pregnancy would likely reverse the results, so the practice recommends that candidates have finished having children. New mothers must wait at least six months after delivery or after they finish breastfeeding.

Combining procedures also has a scheduling advantage. The practice notes that one mommy makeover recovery, though longer than recovery from a single operation, cuts down the total time compared with having each procedure on its own. That means one block of time away from work instead of several. Like any surgery, a mommy makeover carries risks, and those deserve the same attention in the consultation as the payment plan.

The consultation is where the quote and the plan meet. Bring your questions for the lender, your work schedule and the name of the person who will help at home, and the number you leave with will rest on decisions you made.
