Deidre Pujols spent decades immersed in the world of professional baseball, supporting her ex-husband Albert Pujols’ storied career. But behind the fame, she was quietly building her own legacy—one of purpose, empowerment, and global change.
Today, as founder of Open Gate International, Pujols is rewriting what it means to lead a life of service.
A New Chapter of Leadership
“Baseball was a big part of my life,” she says, “but philanthropy has always been at the heart of who I am.”
Her organization began as an effort to help survivors of human trafficking and individuals with Down syndrome—both causes close to her heart. Over time, it expanded into a global training network designed to empower marginalized communities through culinary education and entrepreneurship.
The Challenges Behind the Vision
Running nonprofits across multiple countries isn’t glamorous. “Funding, regulations, and messaging—those are constant challenges,” Pujols admits. “If you don’t have the right board or team, your mission can collapse.”
Still, her resilience shines through. “Engagement is key,” she says. “You can have the best idea in the world, but if people don’t connect emotionally, it won’t last.”
Lessons from the Field
Pujols’ success didn’t come overnight. Her earlier projects, such as Strike Out Slavery, used the power of celebrity to raise awareness, but her latest work is about long-term transformation.
In India, her culinary training programs operate in collaboration with Vision Rescue, an organization already working on the ground to support vulnerable communities. Together, they train students from every background—some who can afford tuition, and others who receive scholarships. “It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about teaching them to thrive,” she explains.
Building a Legacy That Lasts
Whether in Calcutta, Cambodia, or California, Pujols’ message remains the same: sustainable giving creates sustainable change.
“Philanthropy is about partnership,” she says. “It’s about lifting others so they can lift themselves.”
With her feet firmly planted in purpose, Deidre Pujols is proving that impact, not fame, is the true measure of legacy.
